Amikacin + ampicillin sulbactam is a combination of two antibacterial agents used together for the treatment of severe infections, particularly those caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria such as Acinetobacter species. Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis; sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that extends the spectrum of activity of ampicillin by inhibiting beta-lactamases produced by resistant bacteria. The combination has been studied for synergistic effects against extensively drug-resistant organisms and may be used as second-line therapy in certain clinical scenarios such as peritonitis or severe hospital-acquired infections[2][3][7]. However, there are clinically significant drug interactions between these agents, and their combined use should be carefully considered[1][4].
