Serine Beta-Lactamase (Ambler Class A) (SBL Class A)

Target
SBL Class A
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Hydrolase, Beta-Lactamase, Ambler Class A Enzyme
01

Overview

Serine beta-lactamases (SBLs) of Ambler class A are enzymes produced by bacteria that confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. They hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring, a core component of these antibiotics, inactivating them. The active site contains a conserved serine residue. Examples include penicillinases (TEM-1, SHV-1), extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) like the CTX-M family, and carbapenemases like KPC. They are typically inhibited by clavulanate, tazobactam, and sulbactam, but resistance can develop. They represent a major threat to public health due to their role in antibiotic resistance.
