Amikacin + clindamycin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of serious intra-abdominal infections and sepsis, especially when both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria are suspected. Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to cell death. It is particularly effective against resistant gram-negative bacilli such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter species. Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, with strong activity against anaerobic bacteria and some gram-positive cocci. The combination provides broad-spectrum coverage for mixed infections involving both aerobic gram-negative organisms (targeted by amikacin) and anaerobes or certain gram-positive pathogens (targeted by clindamycin). This regimen has been shown in clinical studies to be highly effective in managing intra-abdominal sepsis[1][5].
