Bacterial 50S Ribosomal Subunit (50S Ribosomal Subunit)

Target
50S Ribosomal Subunit
Molecular classification
Ribonucleoprotein, Ribosomal Subunit
01

Overview

The bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit is the larger component of the prokaryotic 70S ribosome, essential for protein synthesis. It is composed of 23S rRNA, 5S rRNA, and approximately 31 structural proteins. Its primary function is to catalyze peptide bond formation during translation. Many antibiotics target the 50S subunit to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis.
