This combination is used to treat infections caused by mycobacteria, specifically **Mycobacterium avium** complex (MAC) and sometimes in cases of **multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB)**. The drugs work through different mechanisms: - **Amikacin** inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S subunit of ribosomes, preventing bacterial growth. - **Rifampicin** inhibits RNA synthesis by binding to the β subunit of RNA polymerase. - **Ethambutol** inhibits arabinosyltransferases, preventing mycobacterial cell wall synthesis. The combination is synergistic, meaning it is more effective when used together than when each drug is used alone.
