Overview

Amiloxate is a small molecule organic compound used as a UV-B filter in sunscreen products. It is approved for use in the European Union and functions by selectively absorbing UV-B radiation (280–320 nm), thereby protecting skin from sunburn and long-term damage caused by ultraviolet radiation[1][3][6]. Amiloxate also exhibits anti-inflammatory activity—demonstrated by dose-dependent inhibition of edema in animal studies—and may possess antioxidant properties due to its structural similarity to cinnamic acid derivatives[1][6]. It acts as a free radical scavenger and has been proposed to have antimicrobial and antifibrotic potential[6]. In Europe, it is regulated as an active ingredient in cosmetic sunscreens; it has not been approved for over-the-counter sunscreen drug products in the United States but can be used as a UV absorber in cosmetics[3][4].
