Overview

Aminacrine is a small molecule antiseptic and anti-infective agent belonging to the acridine class of compounds. It is highly fluorescent and has been used clinically as a topical antiseptic for its slow-acting germicidal properties against bacteria and fungi[2][7]. Aminacrine acts primarily by intercalating into DNA, disrupting nucleic acid function, which underlies both its antimicrobial activity and its use as an experimental mutagen[2][8]. It has also been shown to inhibit the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in tumor cells by downregulating the p110 gamma subunit of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), impacting cell survival pathways including p53 and NF-kappaB signaling[6]. Its principal clinical uses have included treatment of vaginal infections such as moniliasis (candidiasis), trichomonal vaginitis, Haemophilus infections, tinea versicolor, mastitis, minor wounds/burns (often in combination with cetrimide), and as a prophylactic agent in gynecological procedures[5][7].
