Overview

Amineptine is an atypical tricyclic antidepressant that was developed by the French Society of Medical Research in the 1960s and introduced to market by Servier in France in 1978[2][5]. It acts primarily as a selective dopamine reuptake inhibitor and releasing agent, with a lesser effect on norepinephrine reuptake, resulting in a fast-onset antidepressant effect[1][2][5][6]. Unlike most other tricyclic antidepressants, it has minimal impact on serotonin reuptake. Amineptine was used for the treatment of depressive disorders but became associated with abuse potential due to its stimulant-like effects and cases of hepatotoxicity. These safety concerns led to its withdrawal from the French market in 1999; it remains illegal or unapproved in many countries including Germany and the United States[2][3].
