Aminexil is a **small molecule** compound chemically known as diaminopyrimidine oxide and sometimes referred to as kopexil[3]. It is a topical agent primarily used for the treatment of hair loss, especially androgenetic alopecia. Unlike minoxidil (to which it is structurally related), aminexil's mechanism of action is believed to involve the inhibition of enzymes contributing to hair loss and improvement of hair anchoring. - It inhibits the activity and expression of lysyl oxidase, an enzyme involved in the thickening of the hair root sheath, thereby preventing perifollicular fibrosis—a process where rigid collagen pushes the hair root toward the surface, causing premature hair loss[6][5]. - It may also inhibit 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone associated with follicular miniaturization and hair loss[1]. - Aminexil possibly improves scalp microcirculation, promoting nutrient delivery to hair follicles and healthier hair growth[1]. Developed and promoted by L'Oréal, aminexil is found in shampoos, serums, lotions, and other topical haircare products. Its efficacy is supported by clinical and anecdotal evidence, but it is not approved as a pharmaceutical drug in the US or Europe—it is regulated more as a cosmetic or dermocosmetic ingredient[3][6].
