Amino acid-derived lipids are an investigational topical therapy developed by West China Hospital for the prevention and treatment of radiation dermatitis, particularly in patients with head and neck cancer. These lipids are engineered to self-assemble into nanostructures that possess intrinsic reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capabilities. Radiotherapy induces the production of excessive ROS in the skin, which triggers oxidative stress, inflammatory cascades, and tissue damage. By neutralizing these free radicals directly at the site of administration, the amino acid-derived lipids aim to protect skin integrity, reduce the severity of radiation-induced lesions, and ensure the continuity of cancer treatment. The product is currently being evaluated in a multicenter randomized clinical trial (NCT06143306).
