Aminocaproic acid is a synthetic small molecule antifibrinolytic agent used to control and prevent excessive bleeding, particularly when the breakdown of blood clots (fibrinolysis) occurs too rapidly. It works primarily by inhibiting plasminogen activators, thereby preventing the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, which is responsible for clot breakdown. This action stabilizes formed clots and reduces bleeding. Aminocaproic acid is indicated for use in conditions such as post-surgical bleeding (especially after heart or liver surgery), certain cancers (prostate, lung, stomach, cervix), placental abruption in pregnancy, urinary tract bleeding following prostate or kidney surgery or due to neoplastic disease, and hematological disorders like aplastic anemia[1][2][3][4][5][6]. It is available as oral tablets, oral solution, and intravenous injection.
