Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aminoleban is a specialized amino acid formulation enriched with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)—leucine, isoleucine, and valine—and containing reduced amounts of aromatic amino acids (AAAs) and methionine. Developed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical, it is designed to correct the amino acid imbalance (Fischer ratio) typically seen in patients with chronic liver disease and hepatic encephalopathy. By providing BCAAs, it supports protein synthesis, reduces ammonia levels through muscle detoxification, and competes with AAAs for transport across the blood-brain barrier, thereby improving neurological symptoms. It is available as an intravenous infusion (Aminoleban 8%) and an enteral/oral nutritional supplement (Aminoleban EN).
