Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride (Ameluz) is a topical photosensitizing agent developed by Biofrontera Bioscience GmbH for the treatment of actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma. Formulated as a nanoemulsion gel (BF-200 ALA), it serves as a metabolic precursor to protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) within the heme biosynthetic pathway. Upon topical application, the drug preferentially accumulates in dysplastic cells where it is converted to PpIX. Subsequent illumination with a specific light source (such as the BF-RhodoLED lamp) triggers the formation of singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species, inducing selective necrosis and apoptosis of the targeted lesions. This photodynamic therapy (PDT) approach allows for the treatment of both individual lesions and broader areas of field cancerization.
