Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) nanosoma gel is a topical photosensitizing prodrug formulation utilized in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of actinic keratosis. Studied in a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT02647151) by the Fundación Instituto Valenciano de Oncología, this nanosoma gel formulation is designed to improve skin penetration of the active ingredient compared to traditional cream-based photosensitizers. Upon topical application, ALA is absorbed by abnormal keratinocytes and converted into protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) via the heme biosynthetic pathway. PpIX is a potent photosensitizer that selectively accumulates in dysplastic cells. When the treated area is illuminated with a specific wavelength of light (typically red light), PpIX is activated, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that induce targeted cell death and lesion clearance.
