Overview

Aminophylline + methazolamide is a combination of two small molecule drugs. Aminophylline is a nonselective adenosine receptor antagonist and phosphodiesterase inhibitor, primarily used as a bronchodilator for the treatment of asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Methazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used mainly to treat glaucoma by reducing intraocular pressure but also has diuretic properties. The combination has been studied for its potential to abrogate hypoxia-mediated impairment in endurance exercise performance in humans, leveraging aminophylline’s respiratory stimulant effects and methazolamide’s ability to induce mild metabolic acidosis through carbonic anhydrase inhibition[1][6][7]. There are no widely recognized brand names or approved fixed-dose products containing both agents together.
