Overview

Aminorex is an amphetamine-like anorectic agent that was developed and marketed in the 1960s as an appetite suppressant for weight loss. It acts as a central nervous system stimulant and functions primarily as a serotonin–norepinephrine–dopamine releasing agent (SNDRA), increasing the release of these monoamines in the brain. Aminorex also acts as a weak agonist at serotonin 5-HT2 receptors, including subtypes 5-HT2A, 5-HT2B, and 5-HT2C. The drug was withdrawn from the market after being linked to outbreaks of severe pulmonary hypertension, particularly in Europe, where it caused significant morbidity and mortality among users. Aminorex is now classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States due to its high potential for abuse and lack of accepted medical use[1][2][3][4][5][7].
