Overview

Aminosalicylate sodium is a bacteriostatic antitubercular agent used in the treatment of tuberculosis, particularly in multi-drug resistant (MDR-TB) cases or as a component of retreatment regimens. As the sodium salt of para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS), it functions as a prodrug that interferes with folic acid synthesis in *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. Specifically, it acts as a competitive inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthase, mimicking para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). Due to its potential for gastrointestinal irritation, it is frequently formulated as enteric-coated tablets. While an older agent in the antitubercular pharmacopeia, it remains a critical second-line therapy when primary agents like streptomycin or rifampicin are unsuitable or resisted.
