Overview

Aminosyn II is a parenteral **amino acid injection** used for short-term nutritional support in patients who cannot adequately receive or absorb enteral nutrition. It is administered intravenously, either by peripheral vein with dilute dextrose and optionally intravenous fat emulsion, or by central vein for total parenteral nutrition support. Its therapeutic effect is nutritional rather than receptor-targeted: it supplies essential and nonessential amino acids as a nitrogen source to maintain or restore protein synthesis, help preserve lean body mass, and prevent or reverse negative nitrogen balance in catabolic or gastrointestinal-compromised patients. The product described is a sulfite-free formulation and is used in clinical settings for nutritional support rather than for a disease-specific pharmacologic mechanism.
