Overview
Amiodarone is a class III antiarrhythmic medication used to treat and prevent serious, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. It works by prolonging the cardiac action potential and refractory period through multiple mechanisms, including blocking potassium channels (prolonging repolarization), sodium channels (slowing conduction velocity), calcium channels (decreasing intracellular calcium during contraction), and noncompetitive antagonism of alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. Amiodarone is typically reserved for use when other antiarrhythmic drugs have failed or are not tolerated due to its risk of severe side effects affecting the heart, lungs, liver, thyroid, and vision[1][2][4][6].
