Overview
Amitex PSE is a combination pharmaceutical product containing the expectorant guaifenesin and the nasal decongestant pseudoephedrine. Formulated as an extended-release tablet, it is indicated for the temporary relief of cough and nasal congestion associated with the common cold, hay fever, or other upper respiratory allergies. Guaifenesin functions as an expectorant by thinning and loosening bronchial secretions, thereby increasing the efficiency of the cough reflex to remove accumulated mucus. Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine that acts primarily as an agonist at alpha-adrenergic receptors in the respiratory mucosa, leading to vasoconstriction, reduced tissue hyperemia, and decreased nasal congestion. The product was manufactured by Actavis Totowa but was subject to a voluntary recall in 2008 due to manufacturing practice concerns.
