Overview

Amlodipine is an oral dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and certain types of angina (chronic stable angina, vasospastic/variant angina), as well as to reduce the risk of hospitalization for angina and heart surgery in patients with coronary artery disease. It works by inhibiting voltage-dependent L-type calcium channels, primarily in vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to vasodilation and reduced peripheral vascular resistance. This lowers blood pressure and increases oxygen supply to the heart while reducing its workload. Amlodipine is available as tablets or oral solutions under several brand names[1][2][3][4][5][6].
