Overview

Amlodipine + metformin is a combination of two small molecule drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action and therapeutic indications. Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker primarily used to treat hypertension and angina by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle, resulting in vasodilation and reduced blood pressure[5][6]. Metformin is a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent used as first-line therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus; it lowers blood glucose by decreasing hepatic gluconeogenesis, reducing intestinal absorption of glucose, and increasing insulin sensitivity[3][4]. While both drugs are commonly co-prescribed for patients with comorbid hypertension and type 2 diabetes, there is no evidence that they are available as a fixed-dose combination product under any unique brand name or formulation. The combination may require monitoring due to potential pharmacodynamic interactions affecting blood sugar control[7][9].
