The 'A' designation typically refers to the 18-alpha-glycyrrhizic acid isomer, which is utilized in pharmaceutical applications for its hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral activities. Its primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11-beta-HSD), which prevents the conversion of cortisol to cortisone, thereby enhancing glucocorticoid-like effects. Additionally, it has been shown to inhibit High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) protein, a key mediator of inflammation. It is widely used in China for the treatment of chronic hepatitis, liver dysfunction, and various inflammatory conditions.
