Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AmnioGel is a clinically scalable, extracellular matrix (ECM)-mimetic hydrogel derived from human amniotic membrane (hAM). Developed by researchers at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) under the EU-funded VANGUARD project, AmnioGel serves as a biocompatible biological scaffold designed to support cell transplantation therapies, particularly for type 1 diabetes. By recreating the native islet microenvironment, AmnioGel promotes the survival, maturation, and function of transplanted pancreatic islets or stem cell-derived islet organoids. It facilitates the self-assembly of a microvascular network when co-encapsulated with endothelial cells (such as blood outgrowth endothelial cells), which rapidly integrates with the host vasculature post-implantation to ensure sustained nutrient delivery and glycemic control. Additionally, AmnioGel provides partial immune shielding, reducing the migration of cytotoxic immune cells and potentially eliminating the need for chronic immunosuppression.
