Overview

Amnion chorion membrane (ACM) is a bioresorbable biological allograft derived from human placental tissue, specifically comprising the innermost amnion and the adjacent chorion layers. In the field of periodontology, it is utilized as a barrier membrane for guided tissue regeneration (GTR) to treat intrabony defects associated with chronic periodontitis. The membrane functions by providing a physical barrier that prevents the downgrowth of epithelial cells into the periodontal defect, allowing slower-migrating periodontal ligament and bone cells to repopulate the area. Additionally, ACM serves as a reservoir of endogenous growth factors, such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF), which promote cell proliferation and tissue healing. Cairo University has evaluated this material in randomized clinical trials, comparing its efficacy to other regenerative materials like demineralized bone matrix (DBM) putty.
