Overview

Amniotic epithelial stem cells (AESCs), also known as human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs), are pluripotent-like cells derived from the innermost layer of the human term placenta. These cells are characterized by their low immunogenicity, lack of tumorigenicity, and potent immunomodulatory properties. In clinical applications, such as the treatment of ocular chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), AESCs are formulated into eye drops to provide a localized therapeutic effect. They function by modulating the inflammatory environment of the ocular surface and promoting the repair of damaged corneal tissues, offering a potential alternative to conventional immunosuppressive treatments for patients suffering from debilitating ocular symptoms following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
