Overview

A biologic therapy derived from human amniotic fluid (hAF) being investigated by the University of Utah for the treatment of lumbosacral radicular pain associated with lumbar spinal stenosis. This investigational treatment consists of a sterile amniotic fluid filtrate administered via transforaminal epidural injection. The allograft contains a complex array of anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that are thought to provide neuroprotective and regenerative benefits. By targeting inflammation and assisting in the repair of peripheral nerves, it aims to provide a safer alternative to traditional corticosteroid injections, which are associated with risks of bone loss and rare but catastrophic neurologic complications. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase I/II clinical trial (NCT04537026) to determine its efficacy and safety compared to dexamethasone.
