Amniotic fluid injection is a biologic therapy consisting of cell-free amniotic fluid, currently being investigated by Dr. Michael Shuler (J&M Shuler) for the treatment of stenosing tenosynovitis, commonly known as trigger finger. The therapy involves injecting the fluid into the tendon sheath of the affected finger. The active ingredient is cell-free amniotic fluid, which contains a complex mixture of growth factors, cytokines, and extracellular matrix components, including hyaluronic acid and fibronectin. These components provide anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties that support tissue protection and repair. A pilot study published in 2020 demonstrated symptom resolution in approximately 51% of patients, leading to a Phase 3 randomized, blinded trial comparing the efficacy of amniotic fluid injections against standard corticosteroid injections (Solu-Medrol). The development of this therapy involves collaboration or consultancy with Vivex Biologics.
