Amniotic fluid or placental CD117 stem cells is an investigational cell therapy being developed by Wake Forest University Health Sciences for the treatment of progressive forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). The therapy consists of stem cells expressing the CD117 (c-Kit) marker, which are isolated from ethically sourced amniotic fluid or placental tissue. These cells are administered intrathecally into the spinal fluid to bypass the blood-brain barrier and deliver the cells directly to the central nervous system. The mechanism of action is thought to involve neuroprotection, immunomodulation, and potential remyelination, aimed at slowing or reversing the disability progression characteristic of primary and secondary progressive MS. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase I/II clinical trial.
