Overview

Amniotic Membrane Extract Eye Drop (AMEED) is a biologic therapy developed by the Royan Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Technology. It is a cocktail of soluble bioactive factors derived from human amniotic membrane (HAM), produced by homogenizing the tissue and collecting the supernatant. The extract contains several growth factors and bioactive molecules, including epidermal growth factor (EGF), keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RA). AMEED is administered topically as eye drops and is designed to promote the proliferation of limbal stem cells and accelerate the healing of the corneal epithelium. It is primarily being evaluated in clinical trials for the treatment of unilateral limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) caused by chemical burns, where it serves to support in vivo cultivation of stem cells.
