Overview

Amniotic membrane extract eye drops (AMEED) are an investigational biologic therapy developed by researchers at Tanta University for the treatment of resistant or refractory corneal ulcers. Derived from human amniotic membrane, the extract contains a complex biological mixture of growth factors (such as EGF, HGF, and FGF), anti-inflammatory cytokines, and extracellular matrix proteins. These components work synergistically to promote corneal epithelial healing, reduce ocular surface inflammation, and minimize stromal scarring. In clinical settings, AMEED is administered topically as an adjunctive therapy to standard antimicrobial or trophic treatments to accelerate the recovery of ulcers that have failed to respond to conventional management.
