Overview

Amniotic mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) are multipotent stromal/stem cells derived from the amniotic membrane or the amniotic fluid. These cells exhibit properties similar to other sources of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs), including the ability to differentiate into various cell types such as osteoblasts (bone), chondrocytes (cartilage), myocytes (muscle), and adipocytes (fat). AMSCs are notable for their high proliferative capacity, reduced immunogenicity, and strong anti-inflammatory potential. They secrete a range of cytokines and growth factors that promote tissue repair and modulate immune responses. Unlike embryonic stem cells, AMSCs do not form teratomas after transplantation. Their source—amniotic fluid or membrane—makes them an ethically noncontroversial option for regenerative medicine and cell therapy applications in conditions such as orthopedic injuries, neurologic disorders, pulmonary diseases, autoimmune diseases like Crohn’s disease or multiple sclerosis, diabetes mellitus, myocardial injury, bone/cartilage degeneration/injury among others[1][2][3][5][8].
