AMOR-1 is a stabilized formulation of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) developed by the Israeli biotechnology company Amorphical. Unlike traditional calcium supplements that utilize crystalline forms such as calcite or aragonite, AMOR-1 contains calcium in a non-crystalline, amorphous state, which is naturally found in the gastroliths of crustaceans. This unique structure is stabilized to prevent crystallization, resulting in significantly higher solubility and up to double the bioavailability of standard calcium carbonate. AMOR-1 is primarily being developed for the treatment of hypocalcemia in patients with hypoparathyroidism. The therapeutic goal is to provide a more efficient calcium source that can maintain normal serum calcium levels while reducing the need for high-dose calcium and active vitamin D supplementation, thereby potentially lowering the risk of long-term complications like kidney stones and soft tissue calcification.
