**Amotosalen** is a synthetic psoralen derivative used in combination with ultraviolet A (UVA) light to inactivate pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites) and leukocytes in human blood products, primarily platelets and plasma[2][4][5][8][10]. Its mechanism of action is to intercalate into nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), then, upon UVA exposure, form covalent bonds that cross-link these strands, irreversibly blocking replication and transcription and thereby preventing pathogen proliferation or leukocyte-mediated reactions[2][4][5][8]. Amotosalen is primarily used within the INTERCEPT Blood System for reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections[2]. Developed non-clinical and clinical studies have demonstrated a high safety margin with no major toxicological, mutagenic, or carcinogenic effects, and animal studies have confirmed rapid elimination and absence of accumulation or target organ toxicity[2][4][7].
