Overview

Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic penicillin antibiotic in the aminopenicillin class of the penicillin family. It was first described in 1972 and approved by the FDA in 1974. Amoxicillin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections including pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, ear infections (otitis media), urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin infections and as part of combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori-associated ulcers[1][2][4][5]. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby preventing cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains essential for cell wall structural integrity. This leads to bacterial lysis and death[5][6][7]. Amoxicillin is effective against many gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria but is not active against beta-lactamase-producing organisms unless combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor such as clavulanate[6][8].
