Zovikos is a branded generic antibacterial combination of amoxicillin, a penicillin-class beta-lactam antibiotic, and clavulanic acid (as potassium clavulanate), a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Developed and marketed by Apikos Pharma (a division of Penardo Biotech), Zovikos is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis), otitis media, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections. Amoxicillin works by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid acts as a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing the enzymatic degradation of amoxicillin and restoring its activity against beta-lactamase-producing resistant bacterial strains.
