Amoxicillin + esomeprazole is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used together primarily for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease and eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells, thereby creating a less acidic environment in the stomach which enhances the effectiveness of antibiotics against H. pylori and promotes ulcer healing[3][4][5]. This combination may be used as part of multi-drug regimens for H. pylori eradication, often with an additional antibiotic such as clarithromycin[1][3][4].
