Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Amoxicillin + furazolidone is a combination of two small molecule antibiotics used primarily in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection, often as part of multi-drug regimens. Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. Furazolidone is a nitrofuran antimicrobial that acts as both an antibacterial and antiprotozoal agent; it works by enzymatic reduction within bacteria to generate reactive intermediates that damage DNA and other cellular components. Furazolidone also has monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) activity, which can contribute to its side effect profile[4][5]. This combination is particularly valuable in regions with high rates of resistance to metronidazole or clarithromycin, offering an effective alternative for H. pylori eradication[1][2][3][4][5]. The regimen may be combined with other agents such as bismuth salts or proton pump inhibitors for increased efficacy.
