Overview

Amoxicillin + gentamicin is a combination of two antibiotics used together for their synergistic antibacterial effects, particularly against certain resistant bacterial infections. Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing misreading of mRNA. The combination has been shown in preclinical studies to be more effective than either drug alone against highly penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae strains and is considered as a valuable therapeutic alternative for severe infections such as pneumococcal pneumonia[1][2][3]. This regimen may also be used in neonatal sepsis or other serious infections where broad-spectrum coverage including Gram-negative organisms is required[4].
