Overview

This is a combination antibiotic regimen consisting of three agents—amoxicillin, gentamicin, and procaine benzylpenicillin—used primarily for the treatment of serious bacterial infections in neonates and young infants. Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing bacterial cell death. Procaine benzylpenicillin (also known as procaine penicillin G) is a long-acting form of penicillin G combined with the local anesthetic procaine to reduce injection pain; it also inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. This combination has been used in clinical trials for severe neonatal infections when hospital referral is not possible[1][2][4]. The regimen aims to provide broad coverage against common pathogens responsible for neonatal sepsis.
