Overview

Amoxicillin + sulbactam is a combination antibiotic consisting of amoxicillin, a broad-spectrum beta-lactam (aminopenicillin) antibiotic, and sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Amoxicillin works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and leading to cell death. Sulbactam inhibits bacterial beta-lactamases that would otherwise degrade amoxicillin, thereby extending its spectrum of activity to include many beta-lactamase-producing organisms. This combination is indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including respiratory tract infections, ear/nose/throat infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gynecological infections, and as prophylaxis or treatment in certain surgical situations. It is generally well absorbed orally with good tissue penetration and has a favorable safety profile[5].
