Amphetamine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant of the phenethylamine class, used primarily in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), narcolepsy, and occasionally obesity. It exists as two enantiomers—levoamphetamine and dextroamphetamine—with the racemic mixture being referred to as "amphetamine" proper. Amphetamine increases synaptic concentrations of monoamines, especially dopamine and norepinephrine, by promoting their release from presynaptic neurons and inhibiting reuptake. This results in increased alertness, concentration, energy levels, decreased appetite, and elevated mood. Discovered in 1887 by Lazăr Edeleanu and first marketed as Benzedrine in the 1930s for nasal congestion and later other indications including depression and weight loss. Today its use is highly regulated due to its potential for abuse[1][3][5].
