Amphiron Deep

Amphiron Deep is a specialized topical lipid-based formulation of amphotericin B, a polyene antifungal and antiprotozoal agent. Developed by Bharat Serums and Vaccines, it is primarily indicated for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease caused by *Leishmania* species. The "Deep" formulation is engineered to enhance the transdermal penetration of the large amphotericin B molecule, allowing it to reach the deeper layers of the dermis where the parasites reside within macrophages. Mechanistically, amphotericin B binds to ergosterol in the cell membranes of fungi and *Leishmania* promastigotes and amastigotes, leading to the formation of aqueous pores. These pores cause the leakage of essential intracellular ions, such as potassium, resulting in cell lysis and death. This topical delivery system aims to provide high local drug concentrations while significantly reducing the risk of nephrotoxicity and other systemic side effects associated with parenteral amphotericin B administration.
