Overview
Amphora is a nonhormonal, acid-buffering contraceptive vaginal gel developed as a spermicide. Its primary mechanism of action is to maintain the vaginal pH below 5.0 for several hours after application, which immobilizes and kills sperm, thereby preventing fertilization. Amphora has also demonstrated some protective efficacy against certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs), specifically chlamydia and gonorrhea in clinical trials, though it should not be considered a fail-safe method for STI prevention until further data are available.
