Overview

**Amphotericin B deoxycholate** is the conventional non-lipid formulation of amphotericin B, a polyene macrolide antifungal antibiotic produced by *Streptomyces nodosus*. It is formulated with sodium deoxycholate to create a colloidal dispersion for parenteral administration, distinct from liposomal and lipid-complex amphotericin B products. Amphotericin B binds ergosterol in susceptible fungal-cell membranes, disrupting membrane integrity and causing leakage of intracellular contents and fungal-cell death. It is used primarily for severe, progressive, potentially life-threatening systemic fungal infections, including aspergillosis, cryptococcosis, systemic candidiasis, histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, mucormycosis, and sporotrichosis; it has also been studied and used in visceral leishmaniasis. Conventional deoxycholate amphotericin B is associated with substantial infusion-related toxicity, nephrotoxicity, and electrolyte wasting relative to lipid formulations.
