Overview

Amphotericin B fat emulsion refers to a pharmaceutical formulation where the antifungal drug Amphotericin B is incorporated into a lipid emulsion, often using commercially available intravenous lipid emulsions like Intralipid (which contains soybean oil, egg phospholipids, and glycerol). Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal derived from *Streptomyces nodosus*. Its mechanism of action involves binding to ergosterol, a sterol component in the fungal cell membrane, leading to the formation of pores, leakage of essential ions, and ultimately fungal cell death. This fat emulsion formulation aims to reduce the significant toxicity, particularly nephrotoxicity and infusion-related reactions, associated with the conventional amphotericin B deoxycholate formulation, while maintaining its antifungal efficacy. It is typically administered intravenously.
