Overview

Ampicillin + azithromycin is a combination of two antibiotic agents used together for the treatment of bacterial infections. Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic (penicillin class) that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing growth and replication of susceptible bacteria. This combination has been studied in preclinical models for its potential to improve outcomes in severe infections such as sepsis caused by Group B Streptococcus (GBS) and multidrug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, where it demonstrated enhanced efficacy compared to monotherapy, including reduced inflammation and improved survival[1][2]. The dual therapy may also provide anti-inflammatory benefits independent of direct antibacterial activity.
