Overview

Ampicillin + gentamicin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of severe bacterial infections, including neonatal and pediatric sepsis, endocarditis (especially due to Enterococcus species), and meningitis. Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds irreversibly to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing misreading of mRNA. The combination exhibits synergistic bactericidal activity against certain organisms such as Enterococcus spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and some Gram-negative bacteria. This synergy makes it especially effective in serious infections where monotherapy may be insufficient[3][4][5]. Administration should be sequential rather than mixed in the same IV line or container due to chemical incompatibility[1][2][7].
