Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ampicillin + neomycin is a combination of two broad-spectrum antibiotics: ampicillin, a beta-lactam penicillin, and neomycin, an aminoglycoside. Ampicillin acts primarily on Gram-positive bacteria by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Neomycin acts primarily on Gram-negative bacteria by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. This combination is approved for veterinary use in Europe (under brand names such as Metriguard and Metrisan AN) as an intrauterine suspension to treat endometritis and metritis in cattle. It is also commonly used in laboratory research as an oral antibiotic cocktail to deplete gut microbiota in animal models.
