ampicillin + sulbactam

Ampicillin + sulbactam is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic consisting of the semisynthetic penicillin derivative ampicillin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor sulbactam. Ampicillin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death in susceptible bacteria. Sulbactam has minimal antibacterial activity on its own but irreversibly inhibits many beta-lactamases produced by resistant bacteria, thereby protecting ampicillin from enzymatic degradation. This combination extends the spectrum of activity of ampicillin to include organisms that produce beta-lactamase enzymes. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of infections such as skin and skin structure infections, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, pelvic inflammatory disease, orbital cellulitis, and other susceptible bacterial infections[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10].
